The aftermath of twin earthquakes in Venezuela has left more than 1,400 dead, with rescue teams tirelessly working to find survivors amid the wreckage. The catastrophic events have resulted in thousands of injuries and tens of thousands still missing in the northern parts of the country. The quakes, with magnitudes of 7.2 and 7.5, struck within a minute of each other on Wednesday evening, wreaking havoc particularly in La Guaira and Caracas.
Jorge Rodríguez, president of Venezuela’s National Assembly, confirmed that at least 1,430 lives have been lost, with approximately 3,200 people injured and over 3,100 rendered homeless. The magnitude of the disaster has prompted a mass mobilization of rescue efforts, as teams and residents alike sift through debris, sometimes with bare hands, in a desperate search for signs of life. A glimmer of hope emerged in Caraballeda, where rescuers pulled an 11-year-old boy alive from the ruins of a collapsed building.
The United Nations has assessed the damage from the earthquakes to be around $6.7 billion, which equates to nearly 6% of Venezuela’s GDP. This figure encompasses the destruction of homes and infrastructure but does not yet include the broader economic impact. As the nation grapples with this crisis, international aid is beginning to flow in. Countries such as the United States, Mexico, Brazil, France, Netherlands, Türkiye, and the United Kingdom are sending rescue teams and emergency support, with the US pledging to assist in coordinating flights, medical aid, and search-and-rescue operations.
To maintain order and assist with relief efforts, more than 14,000 military and police personnel have been deployed to the regions hit hardest by the earthquakes. However, officials have cautioned that access to some areas remains difficult due to the extensive damage and safety hazards. As time becomes increasingly critical, rescue experts emphasize the urgency of locating survivors trapped beneath the rubble. International bodies, including the United Nations and the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, are calling for sustained global assistance as Venezuela endures one of its most severe humanitarian crises in recent memory.
