In his inaugural address to the United Nations General Assembly, Mexican Foreign Minister Roberto Velasco reaffirmed Mexico’s dedication to national sovereignty while advocating for multilateral cooperation. Velasco underscored Mexico’s commitment to working closely with international partners without compromising its autonomy, highlighting the nation’s approach of fostering international cooperation without subordination.
Representing Mexico in lieu of President Claudia Sheinbaum, Velasco emphasized the importance of social development as a foundation for lasting peace. He pointed to Mexico’s social policies, efforts in poverty reduction, and a reported decline in homicide rates as examples of the country’s approach to achieving sustainable peace through social progress and respect for national self-determination.
Velasco also addressed global issues, reaffirming Mexico’s support for a two-state solution in the Middle East and advocating for Palestine’s right to exist within secure and recognized borders. Additionally, he reiterated Mexico’s opposition to the U.S. embargo on Cuba, pledging continued humanitarian assistance to the nation.
During the assembly, Velasco engaged in bilateral discussions with officials from a range of countries, including Spain, France, Qatar, Norway, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, and Peru. In his meeting with Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares, the two discussed strengthening bilateral relations and preparing for the upcoming Ibero-American Summit in Madrid.
Further discussions with Peru focused on the reopening of embassies following the restoration of diplomatic ties, with both countries agreeing to prioritize dialogue and mutual respect. Velasco’s meetings also covered topics such as economic cooperation, strategic investment, and trade relations, as well as efforts to reform and strengthen multilateral institutions like the United Nations.
